What it feels like:

What they are:

BLM manages vast areas of public land—especially in the West—often more rugged, remote, and less developed.

What it feels like:

Can I camp anywhere?

  • USFS:

    ✅ Yes, dispersed camping is widely allowed unless posted otherwise

  • NPS:

    ❌ No, camping is restricted to designated campgrounds or permitted backcountry sites

  • BLM:

    ✅ Yes, dispersed camping is generally allowed on most lands

⏳ How long can I stay?

  • USFS:

    Typically 14 days in a 30-day period

  • BLM:

    Typically 14 days in a 28-day period

  • NPS:

    Varies by park, often strict limits (7–14 days or less)

🚐 Can I live or camp long-term?

  • All agencies prohibit permanent occupancy

🥾 Hiking & Access…..Do I need a permit to hike?

  • USFS:
